Return to Water in Africa

Recreation

by Lori Duff, Grahipla, Côte d'Ivoire

Like children anywhere, the children here in Kounahiri love to play in the rain. During downpours, they run around chanting, splashing, singing songs, and sometimes pretending to be fish sellers (who ride around on bicycles, yelling "Good Fish" and ringing their bells). Sometimes the children take a bath in the rain as their mothers put out buckets and basins to catch water.

Young children will play in the rain. Otherwise, there are no games, because it would be a waste of water. There are no water sports in my village.

by Amy Bailey, Grand-Bereby, Côte d'Ivoire

I've seen no sign of organized water sports or specific children's games.
