The Environment and Agriculture

The environment and quality of water have been improved through the advancement of new technology. First, the capital city of Praia has running water in some households, thanks to the construction of a desalination plant. Second, through the construction of rock walls and the planting of millions of trees by the government, desertification has been slowed. Third, since much of the country's water is distributed by government truck, the water is easily chlorinated, making it a little safer to consume. Finally, various organizations have been able to educate families about sanitation, including dry latrines, bathing nutrition, and trash cleanup.

In Cape Verde, new technology has been vital in the fight against drought. Farmers' yields have improved, although they still provide only 15 to 25 percent of the country's needs. Children and families are becoming healthier. I believe that through education and new technology, this country should not suffer from the severity of the droughts that have plagued Cape Verdeans throughout history.
